Oral Health During Pregnancy
Pregnancy brings many changes, including effects on oral health. At FB Dental Yarrabilba, we support expectant mothers through safe, appropriate dental care that protects both mother and baby.
Pregnancy Gingivitis
Hormonal changes make gums more sensitive to plaque, often causing pregnancy gingivitis—red, swollen, bleeding gums. This typically appears during the second trimester. While usually temporary, untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which research links to preterm birth and low birth weight.
Morning Sickness and Teeth
Frequent vomiting exposes teeth to stomach acid, potentially causing enamel erosion. After vomiting, rinse with water or a baking soda solution (teaspoon in water) to neutralise acid. Wait 30 minutes before brushing to avoid spreading acid across softened enamel.
Dental Treatment During Pregnancy
Routine dental care—check-ups, cleanings, necessary treatments—is safe and recommended during pregnancy. The second trimester is often most comfortable for appointments. Essential treatments like fillings should proceed; untreated infections pose greater risk than treatment. We use pregnancy-safe anaesthetics and minimise X-rays (with lead apron protection if necessary).
Prevention Is Key
Continue brushing twice daily and flossing. If brushing triggers nausea, try a bland toothpaste or brush later in the day. Eat a balanced diet; cravings for sugary or acidic foods are common but should be moderated. Stay hydrated.
After Baby Arrives
Your baby's oral bacteria come from caregivers—maintaining your oral health helps protect your child. Avoid sharing utensils or "cleaning" dummies in your mouth. Schedule your child's first dental visit by age two.
