The Right Age for Orthodontic Evaluation
The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends children have an orthodontic assessment by age seven. At FB Dental Yarrabilba, we evaluate developing teeth and jaws to identify issues best addressed early.
Why Age Seven?
By seven, children have enough permanent teeth to assess developing bite patterns. First molars establish the back bite, and front teeth reveal alignment issues. Early detection allows intervention while jaw growth can be guided. Not all children need early treatment—many simply need monitoring until teenage years.
What We Look For
Early assessment checks for crowding or spacing issues, crossbites (upper teeth sitting inside lower teeth), protruding front teeth vulnerable to trauma, underbites or overbites, habits affecting development (thumb sucking, tongue thrusting), and premature or delayed tooth loss.
Benefits of Early Intervention
When needed, early treatment can guide jaw growth for better facial development, create space for erupting permanent teeth, reduce risk of trauma to protruding teeth, correct harmful habits, and simplify or shorten later comprehensive treatment. Some problems are easier to fix in growing children than in adults.
What If Treatment Isn't Needed Yet?
Most children assessed at seven don't need immediate treatment. We'll monitor development with periodic check-ups, watching for the right time to begin if treatment becomes necessary. Parents gain peace of mind knowing their child's development is being professionally observed.
